A barcode problem discovered after you print packaging is an expensive problem. When you buy verifiable GS1-originating UPC, EAN, and GTIN barcode numbers, you need more than a string of digits. You need a legitimate assignment, usable barcode artwork, and straight answers about where the code can be used.

What barcode number does your product need?

A UPC is typically a 12-digit GTIN used for products sold in the United States and Canada. An EAN is generally a 13-digit GTIN used internationally. Both identify one specific sellable product. Different size, color, flavor, bundle, or pack count? That is a different SKU and needs its own number.

GTIN is the umbrella term. It includes GTIN-12 (UPC), GTIN-13 (EAN), and GTIN-14 for master cases. A GTIN-14 identifies the shipping carton, not the individual item inside it. If you sell a six-pack in a case, the single item and the case should not share a barcode number.

What you should receive when you buy GS1 barcode numbers

Do not settle for a bare number copied into an email. A proper purchase should provide your assigned UPC or EAN numbers in a spreadsheet, a certificate documenting ownership and authenticity, and print-ready barcode graphics in formats your designer or printer can use.

EZUPC delivers barcode assignments immediately, including EPS and PDF graphics, plus files for UPC/GTIN-12, EAN/GTIN-13, with conversions available for master-case GTIN-14 use. The goal is simple: give your packaging team and listing team the files they need without making you wait for paperwork.

Retailer and Amazon compatibility: the no-BS answer

GS1-originated barcode numbers are used across retail and ecommerce, but no honest seller should promise universal acceptance. Some national retailers require a barcode prefix registered directly to your company through GS1. Amazon also has brand- and category-specific requirements that can change, especially when a listing must match GS1 data or involves Brand Registry.

Before buying, confirm the requirements of the retailer, distributor, or marketplace that matters most to your launch. For many independent retailers, ecommerce stores, and product listings, reseller-assigned GS1-originated codes are a practical, affordable fit. If a particular program requires direct GS1 membership, know that before you spend money on packaging.

Buy only what your catalog requires

Count every distinct product variation and every master case you plan to identify. Start with one code if you truly have one SKU, or buy in volume if your line is expanding. Lifetime ownership and no renewal fees can make the math far easier for a small business than an ongoing membership.

Get the barcode right before the label goes to print. It is one of the cheapest parts of a product launch and one of the most annoying things to fix later.
