
Amazon can reject a product listing before a customer ever sees it, and the reason is often one small field: the product ID. Amazon barcode requirements are not just about printing a scannable UPC on a package. They are about using a valid GTIN that matches the product, the brand, and the information Amazon can verify.
For a seller about to send packaging to print, this distinction matters. A barcode that scans perfectly at a warehouse can still create a listing problem if its number is not acceptable for the Amazon catalog. Here is the plain-English version of what Amazon expects and how to avoid buying, assigning, or printing the wrong code.
Amazon Barcode Requirements: No BS TL;DR
Most new physical products sold on Amazon need a Global Trade Item Number, or GTIN. In the United States, that usually means a 12-digit UPC. Products sold internationally may use a 13-digit EAN instead. Amazon uses that number to identify the exact item being listed and to check whether the product data is credible.
The key word is exact. One unique sellable product needs one unique GTIN. If you sell a black water bottle and the same bottle in blue, those are two separate SKUs and generally need two separate UPCs. A three-pack is also a separate sellable unit, so it needs its own UPC rather than reusing the UPC from the single unit.
Amazon may validate the GTIN against GS1 data. If the brand or manufacturer information in Amazon does not line up with the data associated with that GTIN, the listing can be blocked or you may be asked for additional documentation. Do not assume that a barcode image, an old spreadsheet, or a number that worked on another marketplace will satisfy this check.
Start With the Right GTIN for the Product
A GTIN is the number. A UPC or EAN is a common GTIN format. The bars and spaces printed beneath that number are simply the machine-readable graphic. Sellers sometimes buy a barcode graphic and believe they have solved the Amazon requirement. They have not, unless the number behind that graphic is legitimate and assigned correctly.
For US retail packaging, UPC-A is the usual choice. It contains 12 digits and is widely used for products sold in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 contains 13 digits and is commonly used outside North America, although it can also be used in many international selling situations.
Amazon does not care whether the number is attractive, cheap, or printed in a certain font. It cares whether the GTIN identifies the item accurately and can be validated when Amazon checks it. The barcode graphic still needs to be printed clearly for retail scanning, but a readable graphic alone does not make the listing compliant.
One Product Variation Is Not “Close Enough”
Assign a fresh GTIN whenever a customer is buying a meaningfully different item. That includes a different size, color, flavor, scent, model, count, or bundle configuration. If the variation has its own inventory count, its own package, or its own selection on the product page, treat it as its own product identifier.
There are a few exceptions. A small packaging redesign that does not change the product or its sellable configuration may not require a new GTIN. But changing from a 12-ounce package to a 16-ounce package absolutely does. When in doubt, protect your catalog data and assign a new number. Reusing a UPC can cause listing conflicts that are far more expensive than one additional code.
Why GS1 Data Matching Is the Real Issue
Amazon’s product-ID checks are designed to reduce duplicate listings, counterfeit claims, and inaccurate catalog data. That means the platform may compare the UPC or EAN submitted in your listing with information available through GS1 records.
This is where sellers need to slow down. A legitimate GS1-originated barcode number is not automatically the same thing as a GTIN directly licensed to your company through a current GS1 membership. Depending on Amazon’s current validation rules, your product category, your brand status, and the information Amazon expects to see, that difference can matter.
If Amazon requires the GS1 record to show your company as the brand owner, obtaining a direct GS1 license is usually the cleanest route. This is particularly relevant for brands pursuing Brand Registry or building a long-term catalog under a company name they want reflected in GS1 data.
On the other hand, GS1-originated UPCs sold with documented ownership can be a practical, affordable fit for many sellers and products. Still, nobody should promise that one type of code will override every Amazon brand or catalog rule. Amazon controls its platform, and its policies can change.
The protective move is simple: decide what Amazon will need from your specific listing before you print thousands of packages. If you are unsure, gather your brand name, product details, intended marketplace, and seller-account situation, then get a clear answer before assigning codes.
UPCs, FNSKUs, and GTIN Exemptions Are Different Things
Amazon terminology causes unnecessary confusion because sellers may encounter more than one barcode for the same product.
A UPC or EAN identifies the product in the broader retail world. It is used to create or match a listing in Amazon’s catalog. An FNSKU is an Amazon-specific fulfillment label used to identify inventory within Amazon’s fulfillment network. If you use Fulfillment by Amazon, Amazon may require an FNSKU label on each unit, especially when your inventory should not be commingled with inventory from other sellers.
An FNSKU does not replace a UPC for a new listing that requires a GTIN. It comes later in the process and serves a different operational job. Your package can carry a UPC, while an FNSKU label is applied over it or elsewhere on the unit according to Amazon’s prep instructions.
A GTIN exemption is another separate path. Amazon grants exemptions for certain categories, products, or brands that do not have product IDs. Handmade goods, private-label products in eligible categories, and certain bundles may qualify. An exemption can be useful, but it is not a shortcut to use carelessly. Approval is not automatic, eligibility varies, and Amazon may still ask for product images or brand information.
If you have a standard consumer product and plan to sell through multiple channels, a valid UPC is usually the more flexible long-term choice. It can support Amazon, your own website, retail point-of-sale systems, distributors, and inventory software. An Amazon exemption only solves the Amazon portion of the problem.
How to Enter the Barcode Without Creating a Conflict
Once you have the correct number, enter it accurately when creating the listing. Select the proper product ID type, such as UPC or EAN, and enter every digit exactly as assigned. Do not add spaces, dashes, prefixes, or extra zeros unless Amazon’s listing form specifically requires them.
The brand name deserves equal attention. Use the brand name consistently on the product, packaging, listing, invoices, and any trademark documentation. Minor differences such as adding “Inc.” in one place and omitting it in another may be manageable, but wildly inconsistent naming invites trouble. “North Peak,” “North Peak Outdoors,” and “NPO Gear” can look like three different brands to an automated system.
Do not assign a UPC to a generic product and later attach it to a branded version. Do not borrow a supplier’s UPC unless you are listing that supplier’s exact product under the existing catalog data. And do not use a UPC found online, copied from a competitor, or generated by a random barcode tool. Those shortcuts can lead to suppressed listings, catalog merges, or ownership disputes.
Print the Barcode Correctly After the Number Is Assigned
For packaging, use a high-quality barcode graphic made from the assigned number. EPS and PDF files are generally the right formats for designers because they preserve clean edges at print size. Avoid taking screenshots, stretching low-resolution images, or placing the barcode over busy artwork.
Keep adequate white space around the barcode, use strong dark-on-light contrast, and test the final printed package with a scanner before committing to a large production run. Glossy materials, curved containers, tiny labels, and poor ink contrast can all create scan failures.
The barcode should be large enough for the package and printing method, but bigger is not always better. A packaging designer or printer can follow standard UPC sizing guidance. What matters most is a clear, undistorted symbol that scans reliably at the point of sale.
A Better Way to Decide Before You Buy
Before purchasing codes, count every distinct sellable item, not just every product line. Include colors, sizes, multipacks, gift sets, and any future configurations you know are coming. Then determine where each item will be sold: Amazon only, Amazon plus retail, international marketplaces, distributors, or all of the above.
That answer affects whether you need UPCs, EANs, GTIN-14 numbers for master cases, or a direct GS1 license under your own company name. Buying the cheapest number without considering those requirements can create a packaging and catalog headache later.
Your barcode is a small piece of artwork with a large job. Get the product identity right first, make sure the GTIN ownership path fits your Amazon plan, and then print with confidence. That is how you launch a listing without discovering a preventable barcode problem at the worst possible time.
